Has anybody upgrade yet? I have Windows 7 currently, never went to 8. I wonder if I just upgrade if all my various vst's and so forth will still work. Ah geez.
Installed W10 could not rollback nor reset. Just done a complete re-install of Windows 7. Loved W10 but it didn't like Reaper or almost all audio playback dropouts crackles order of the day and no one appeared to know why or how. Not saying no and not saying yes just saying my experience with 10 was a mixed bag.
I don't care what OS you run. This is how to approach it: 1. Do you have the need to run a newer app (or plugin) that REQUIRES a newer OS to install it? 2. Is there actually a new feature in the newer OS that you want/need? 3. Did you buy a new machine that requires a newer OS for the hardware? If no, consider the can of worms you may be opening. No matter what, before updating (or rebuilding from clean install): 1. Clone your current system to a free drive. (External is fine. Don't have one? Get one! And don't touch your current system till you do!) 2. Boot from the clone just to make sure. 3. Now build/upgrade to the new OS. 4. If anything doesn't work, restoring from your backup clone is only minutes away. You'll be back to square one and back to work as opposed to dead in the water and screwed.
I upgraded my main DAW and mobile DAW/laptop to Windows 10 and have had nothing but good experiences. Huge projects running great (I use lots of Nebula/Acqua, which are intense CPU munchers), no problems with the new OS. And put away the tin-foil hats, the "privacy" issues are over-blown and can be disabled. So far this is more efficient than Win 7 or 8 and I am am happy to have upgraded. I do not have any hard data, like official bench-marks, there are plenty of websites that do that. Of course...I did save 3 separate complete OS images as a safety measure.....
