I've decided I don't need a toolbar and it just sits there looking ugly but you can't seem to close the default one, is there a way to go toolbar free?
You mean in the top left? You can't delete it completely but you can delete all but one of the icons - make that last icon a blank transparent one and you will achieve a simple (redundant) space in place of the toolbar. There is a pro tools theme which makes graphical use of that space iirc so it's not just blank.
I don't want to do that as it would mean if I did ever want to open the toolbar I'd have to reassemble it from scratch. Plus I don't want a redundant space. It should just be possible to close it (and not leave a gap)

Closing the whole toolbar altogether is not that simple deal, you'd have to close the region/marker lanes and ruler as well. Or are people expecting the whole TCP column to offset up which in turn means that the first track(s) won't have any arrange area for them? If that should/would not happen, you are still left with the empty (redundant) space where the toolbar was.
Looking at other DAW's Reaper isn't much different - maybe that space is a little larger than most. I can't see a way around it unless you could collapse the regions/markers/tempo lanes.
it's a pitty, because this screen space is really valuable. Probably that toolbar could be docked in transport? and make time line to the minimum height with option to show / hide the regions/ marker and whatever new is comming ..? I don't know .. anyway
