Reaper is a super program for audio, competing with the best at a fraction of the cost. Is there a similar high quality Video editor which follows the same concept... inexpensive and can be bought online? (For either windoz xp or mac)

Sony Vegas Studio. I use it commercially (and in fact put Win7 on my Mac just to be able to keep using it.)

It looks like the best choices are "Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11" for $50.99 from discount mountain software, or SONY Movie Studio 11 for $30. from newegg. Is the difference worth it? Also, the other PROBLEM is that they both need Windoz XP SP3, and I have Windoz XP SP2. Is there a place to update the software?

It will update the Windows parts on install I think ... go get, or direct you to, the necessary dependencies for what seems to be .net extensions or whatever if it's not already installed. I put off installing Vegas 10 on my Vista laptop for a while and just kept using 8 there because I didn't want to download that stuff. I eventually did download it though. That stuff is already in Win 7.

Vegas has extremely basic, limited and ugly transitions, imHo. * if you want to edit only, Vegas is the best. but if you want compositing and such.. id say try other apps. (i dunno much about Lightworks yet - but its free) (* iirc they added "Star Wipe" transition in V10 or V11. Star Wipe??. c'mon, its almost 2013..)

Vegas' biggest goodie for me is the Takes system. when i edit music videos, thats a lifesaver - i wish it would have the same Take manipulation extensions/scripts that Reaper has. "for eg paste as new take", "implode horizontally", etc. have you ever had a nice motion blur on animated text, Lawrence? (in Vegas)
